Washington, D.C. – Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has strongly criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to establish a migrant detention facility at Guantánamo Bay, calling it an “act of brutality.”

Díaz-Canel expressed his disapproval on social media, arguing that the plan would place deported individuals near a site infamous for human rights violations. “This move situates migrants alongside notorious prisons associated with torture and illegal detention,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday directing U.S. officials to begin preparations for a detention center capable of holding up to 30,000 people at the naval base. Guantánamo Bay, long associated with the detention of terrorism suspects—many of whom were never formally charged—has remained a contentious symbol of U.S. foreign policy.

Defending the decision, Trump stated that the facility would house “the worst criminal illegal aliens who pose a threat to the American people.”

The announcement has sparked international debate, with critics warning of potential human rights violations and raising concerns over detaining migrants in a location historically linked to indefinite detention and harsh interrogation methods.
